Recently Kenya has found herself having a very controversial debate about polygamy. The Woman Representative of Kiambu, Gathoni Wa Muchomba has advocated that Christians should start practising polygamy even when it is illegal in the Kenyan law.

The Woman Representative who rides on controversy has previously claimed in public that her polygamous father made her suffer and grew up fearing men.

In previous interviews, wa Muchomba has narrated her upbringing – especially her father’s behaviour – with pain and frustration.

Raised in Komothai, Githunguri, in a nuclear family of four and a stepfamily of 11, wa Muchomba has in the past unapologetically referred to her father as “an irresponsible drunkard who cared very little for the family.”

She said his behavior affected her relationship with men so negatively that she vowed never to get married.

While her own experience with polygamy is very negative, the woman representative now is advocating for the same without thinking of the consquences it has on children.

While in Africa, the ancestors practised polygamy, the same has been outgrown by time and the reasons given by the Woman Representative for polygamy are flimsy and mere shortcuts to life.

We thus demand that the polygamy debate should end and for Women in Kiambu to start a process to recall their women representative who clearly rides on controversy. Marriage has to be between one man and woman as defined in the constitution of Kenya 2010.

Sign this petition to ask Gathoni Wa Muchomba to stop the irresponsible debate about polygamy at once.

Dear Gathoni Wa Muchomba,

While you seem to advocate for polygamy, you are on record expressing the frustration about your polygamous father and the pain and frustration you experienced growing up in a polygamous set up .  You have claimed publicly that your polygamous father was "“an irresponsible drunkard who cared very little for the family.”You said his  behavior affected your relationship with men so negatively that she vowed never to get married.

While it is unfortunate you had to go through this, we urge you to stop imposing polygamy on innocent children whose lives will be negatively affected by the selfish and chauvinistic set up you are trying to advocate for.

While you like controversy to remain relevant, we urge you to steer away from family issues. At the moment polygamy remains illegal apart from a few exceptions outlined in the Marriage Act 2014 and even with that polygamy practice has decreased.
